Bernardine A Voglewede

Near the bed of my mother, as she lay dying
I heard her call, kind of singing and crying.
"Mamma, oh Mamma," were the words she would say
A sigh, and then peaceful again she would lay.

Wasn't a sad cry of suffering or pain,
Just a beautiful love song with that sweet refrain.
My heart so heavy to know she was dying,
As I held her hand, I couldn't keep from crying.

You may not remember how many time you fell;
Or how many times you drew from the well.
To draw such love from a well so deep
Like the touch of her hand, as I lay me to sleep.

I'll bet Mary cried for her mother and son
And still cries for all mothers till the battle is won
"Mamma, Oh Mamma," means Jesus is nigh
What a beautiful moment as she gives a last sigh.

I'm not a mother, but as a father I too
Will call for my Mamma and so will you.
As you came from her, through her you'll return
By the cross of your salvation Jesus earned.
